It depends on number of link that point towards the page. Page with more number of backlink will rank higher will rank higher in google. This made way easy to webmaster to sell link, To overcome this google introduced quality link specific.
Quality link specific
Google counted Quality link that points to pages and page with higher number of quality link are ranked higher. Quality link are measured by technique called page ranking. It declares the authority of website. Higher authority links can make page to rank higher. Also links from same niche website can make even more effect on google ranking,
But Quality website holders come forward to sell link. This made a negative effect for google. It was not able to control such malpractice by webmasters. To control this google tried a equity passing method called passing the juice.
Passing the Juice
Website with higher rank was selling links which was made a head ache to google. Google wanted to rank really good quality content on the top of the results to queries.
Nofollow
To stop those shares passing through Google, the new concept rel = "nofollow" was introduced in the links.

Panda
Panda was updated by Google in 2011 to remove spam. It is also known as farmers update. The main types of spam content are duplicate content or plagiarism content, using low quality content with grammatical errors, publishing thin pages with less content, stuffing keywords, and rotating content where the paragraphs spin. Later, in 2014, new versions of Panda were released to remove duplicate sites. He became a permanent candidate in the algorithm. Web pages or sites that are at risk are stored in an isolated space where the rating is in a low position.
Penguin
The update penguin was created by google in 2012 is related to removing unwanted links. Different types of spam links are link exchanges, selling links, link farming, spamming which involves getting links from Wikipedia after editing this content, low quality directories and spam. HummingBird
The hummingbird update made by Google in 2013 is based mainly on semantic updating. This update may be flawed in some cases. Rankbrain Update is a new version of Hummingbird update with more artificial intelligence and also a risky upgrade. Google started working automatically based on different search queries from users and made the appropriate update for mobile devices to make the website accept it.
Pigeon Update
